The Sárvár Experimental Station of FRI started its activity in 1954, and was managed by Ferenc Kopecky. At the beginning, the basic task of the station was the improvement of coniferous trees, and from the 60-ies, in order to assist landscape forestry, it also included silviculture, forest protection and site survey. Recently, the Sárvár Experimental Station has again become the institutional center of domestic forest tree breeding and at the same time it plays an important role in poplar improvement and in the production and management of propagation material. The Bajti Nursery that belongs to the Experimental Station, is a suitable background for all these activities. Having important selection facilities, gene collections, sites for cultivar maintenance on its territory of 64 ha, it supports research services that provide help for long-term forest management. Production of propagation material is carried out here to supply material for the experiments and to disseminate cultivars produced by the institute. The tasks of the station regularly change by the needs of the age. Besides traditional improvement procedures, we put a great emphasis on research on sustainable utilization of genetic resources, breeding for resistance, and continuous monitoring of the ecological condition of the environment. An ecological and a genetic laboratory operates in the center in order to fulfil these tasks. The Ecological Laboratory was established in 1998 to help research at the Department of Ecology. The lab activities cover three main areas: precipitation, soil and plant testing. The laboratory is equipped with modern instruments, it can fulfil orders. The lab has established and uses a qualifying system in accordance with the BS EN ISO / IEC 17025:2005 standard. The Genetic laboratory was established in 2000 in order to help research at the Department of Forest Tree Breeding. Molecular genetic tests are carried out here. In addition to the isoenzyme tests used at the beginning, the lab supports the most modern PCR-based techniques (microsatellite markers, AFLP, sequencing). The main tasks and aims of the Experimental Station is to carry out and coordinate research, development, cunsulting, and production in connection with propagation material management. We endeavour to ensure continuous availability of propagation material in adequate quantity for forest planting and reforestation in Hungary. Our mission is to prevent afforestation with propagating material of unknown origin, and to guarantee the best quality origin. Current research will advance the enrichment of cultivar assorment and ecological stability. The main tasks concerning some species propagated generatively (some coniferous species) are genetic evaluations (provenance and progeny tests) witch should be continued with special regard to resistance to disease and adaptation capability, continuous regeneration of gene collections of Scotch pine and black pine. And the main tasks concerning species propagated vegetatively (poplars, willows) are creating and putting into production new varieties, production of starting material for large-scale production and maintainance of breeding collections. The management of the Arboretum is also assigned to the Head of the Experimental Station. The arboretum is hosting the station. Its territory is 9.2 ha, 0,7 ha of which is occupied by a lake. The number of taxa exceeds 300, many of them are varieties registered by their forest or ornamental value. The breeding plot belonging to the arboretum has greenhouses of 520 m2 and an orchard of 1,000 m2. It is an important base for forest tree breeding, for the production of ornamental trees and plants of the arboretum. The Kámon Arboretum at Szombathely also belongs to the Sárvár Experimental Station but managed by the local office. It is one of the richest woody plant collection in Hungary, where 2,500 taxa can be found, which are forest and ornamental plants suitable for utilization. Regarding forest tree breeding and cultivation of ornamental tree nurseries, the pine stemwood collection and seed orchard of the arboretum areof special importance. A greenhouse of 100 m2 and an ornamental tree nursery with its storehouse make for the propagation and dissemination of plants of the arboretum.
